First thing you must remember: SEO are not technical or scientific pros. They are practitioners of an art of selecting right keywords for your website. It’s an art of researching the competitors for those keywords. It’s an art of defining right strategy for scaling gruesome competition for high rankings. Here he is expected to write meaningful content, articles for websites or blogs on a given topic in a search engine friendly way. He is required to promote the site in various social book marking, directory sites by submitting relevant content on these sites. Link building and popularity services are also his responsibility.

On-Page Expert

For SEO On-Page Expert one should have basic technical knowledge about HTML coding & tags, JavaScript, CSS, PHP, WordPress etc. Any computer programming knowledge would be an advantage. Study of various search engine friendly and unfriendly issues and analysis of SEO strategy that needs to be applied on the site is key here.

There may be various technical issues such as URLs redirection issues, dynamic URLs issues, web hosting issues etc. on the site, which has to be resolved. A good communication skill is an added advantage. Career as a SEO On-Page expert is more challenging because one should also have knowledge of some basic off-page methods.


SEO has now emerged as a distinct profession. Earlier Webmasters performed some basic SEO for the sites they managed and that was all. But as sites began to grow and make money, it became more reasonable to hire a dedicated SEO specialist than to have the Webmaster do it. The demand for good SEO experts is high and is constantly on the rise. It is worth noting that the compensation for SEO employees is equal to or even higher than that of developers, designers and marketers.

SEO is a profession that can be practiced while working for a company or as a solo practitioner. As a solo SEO practitioner you can make even more money. Almost all freelance sites have sections for SEO services and offers for $50 an hour or more are quite common. If you are still not confident that you can work on your own, you can start a SEO job, learn a bit and then start your own company.


Today’s SEO are the real practitioner of Social Media. The Social media refers to any online portal, community, technology or software application that is deployed or created to disseminate, manage, organize, share and reuse content both textual and graphic. Social media is used for multiple functional objectives such as product launch, idea generation, online reputation management, driving sales to online store, and to create a community around a brand.


All corporate houses today have greater emphasis on presence in social media. Be it big corporates like Wipro, Hindustan Unilever, Infosys, Maruti, Reliance etc. or, TV channels like Star Plus, Star One, Channel V, Aaj Tak, NDTV, all have hired Social Wavelength to build its social media presence. Then we have unconventional entrants like Bollywood stars, cricketers, chefs, new age spiritual gurus, artists, musicians and entrepreneurs making a splash on social media to connect to fans, release tidbits of information on their work, upload photos and respond to audience curiosity, instantly.

Organizations like NGOs, schools and colleges, public institutions, museums and art galleries, trade associations and informal society groups, are on social media, which is typically, viewed as a low-investment, high return of interest tool by those who cannot afford advertising rates of a tabloid or television to garner support for their causes.


Being a SEO you literally have two domains to work, monitoring and promotions. Monitoring means understanding the customers’ perception about the brand, seeking hitherto unknown insights that people have about the brand, online reputation management, identifying influencers in the space for the brand and detecting a PR crisis before it snowballs.

Promotion means you use social media to create brand awareness or brand building, generate sales leads, product launch, re-launch or re-branding awareness, creating a community around a brand, driving traffic to the website

As an entrant your role may include:

Assisting in planning and leading the management and implementation of strategic social media programmes
Participating and Initiating conversations across different channels
Consuming, Creating and Sharing relevant content
Monitoring and Analyzing conversations, social media activities and sharing the impact through reviews and reports
Observing and Assimilating trends in social media, tools, technology and applications


An analytical bent is very important. People with understanding of real value of social media are getting the best job. If you are good communicator, it adds to your advantages. Knowledge of traditional advertising and Public Relations gives additional edge.

So if you have Mass Communications at graduation or Post-graduation level you can beat others in getting the top notch job though it is a fact that most people come from different backgrounds. But you must be ready to not to apply principles of traditional media to Social Media.


Education-wise, it helps to have a communication background such as Mass Communication or English Literature. But this is not critical. Engineers and Arts graduates do get selected all being fundamentally good communicators. One can be fundamentally good at language and communication, without being a Mass Communication graduate.
